Collection, mainly of research materials relating to old master German drawings from 1540-1640. Included are: research files on artists or projects which contain photographic reproductions, clippings, photocopies, notes, correspondence and offprints; card catalogs organized by artist's name and by collection; correspondence concerning Geissler's exhibition Zeichnung in Deutschland, Deutsche Zeichnung 1540-1640; correspondence concerning his activities as chief curator of prints and drawings at the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart; correspondence regarding Friederich Thöne and two annotated manuscripts of Thöne's unpublished Die Deutsche Meister Zeichnung.

The German art historian Heinrich Geissler was born 29 July 1927 in Obernigk near Breslau, Germany; today's Oborniki Śląskie in Poland. He died 26 February 1990 in Stuttgart. Geissler studied art history and archaeology in Frankfurt, Munich, and Freiburg; since 1983 he was the chief curator of prints and drawings at Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. A student of Kurt Bauch, he completed his dissertation on the Bavarian court painter, Christoph Schwarz, in 1960. The significance of his scholarship must...
